Headstone Unveiling and Committal of Ashes
Celebrants are sometimes asked to assist the family when the deceased’s ashes are laid to rest, or officiate at the unveiling of a headstone at the gravesite. Such ceremonies are generally brief and simple. They provide the opportunity for closure with the realisation that there is a need to move on with life and living.
Highlights of the deceased’s life and perhaps some events that have occurred since the funeral service can be included in the service along with tributes from those present. Memories have become more focussed while the time since the funeral service has enabled people to begin to move through the grieving process. Readings and/or prayers are again appropriate in such ceremonies.
Unveiling the tombstone or scattering the ashes should be accompanied by relevant words from the celebrant, including a blessing if requested by the family. Concluding remarks should encourage those gathered to go forward with hope and affection for one another and thus bring a sense of final closure through a tangible place to return to in the future for mediation and inspiration.
